Invited by Robert De Niro, the founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, the event brought together the cinematic luminaries to reminisce about the 1972 adaptation of Mario Puzo's novel, defying initial skepticism from Paramount Studios and later earning acclaim as one of the most influential films in world cinema.
The genesis of "The Godfather" dates back to 1968 when Mario Puzo's script, initially titled "Mafia," faced doubt from Paramount Pictures. Paramount executives dismissed the viability of Mafia-themed movies in the market following the failure of "The Brotherhood" in the same year. However, Puzo's subsequent novel, "The Godfather," turned the tide, topping The New York Times bestseller list for 67 weeks and compelling Paramount to greenlight the project.
The crucial element was assembling an authentic Italian-American team.
