Prince Harry's legal battle against Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) is ongoing, with his lawyer urging a judge to order MGN to pay nearly £2 million in legal fees.
While Harry was awarded £40,000 in damages in December for phone hacking and unlawful information gathering, it was only a fraction of the amount he sought. Notably, he recently dropped a legal case against the Daily Mail's publisher after an unfavorable pre-trial ruling.
In 2023, Prince Harry became the first senior royal in over a century to testify in court when he appeared to protect his wife Meghan Markle. After the recent ruling against MGN, Harry referred to himself as a "dragon slayer" and pledged to continue challenging the tabloid press.
The hearing on Monday focused on legal fees, with Harry as one of four claimants, including Coronation Street cast members. The judge found privacy violations but dismissed cases from others, such as comedian Paul Whitehouse's ex-wife, due to filing delays.
During the legal proceedings, Harry's barrister, David Sherborne, argued for reimbursement, emphasizing the overwhelming success of the case. MGN's lawyer, Roger Mallalieu, proposed payment only for the portions of claims lost. The judge, Timothy Fancourt, indicated a later ruling. Harry alleges privacy invasion in over 148 articles, and Sherborne requested a trial to address the remaining 115 articles.
Meanwhile, fans have expressed criticism, accusing Harry of delusions and jealousy towards Prince William. William was awarded a million in damages, which he donated to Harry's charity.
Some fans argue that Harry, seemingly driven by greed, disgusts them, while others speculate about his financial situation, suggesting that lawyers are pursuing fees because he may be unable to pay without legal action. The criticism includes accusations that Harry and Meghan act like "gutter trash" and should be treated accordingly.
