One of Elton John's most iconic songs, 'Candle in the Wind' was released and performed at Princess Diana's funeral.
Although they may seem different, Elton John and Diana of Wales had one of the strongest and most beautiful friendships in the world of entertainment. This was made more than clear with the Briton's exciting performance at the funeral of the beloved 'People's Princess'.
However, not everything was easy between the friends. And on one occasion, their close friendship was on the verge of ending after a serious conflict that made them enemies. Today, it is remembered only as a small but curious obstacle in their relationship.
The friendship of Elton John and Diana
Elton John and Diana met in 1981, when the famous musician played for Prince Andrew's birthday. The moment he saw her enter the celebration, he was dazzled by what he described in her book as "an ability to make people feel comfortable in her company."
From that moment, their classic but also adventurous personalities connected and a strong friendship was born that lasted until the princess's last days. However, a close relationship is not without conflict, with one particular occasion that left them close to ending the friendship.
What happened?
It was not just his taste for music and dancing that connected Elton John and Diana. The musician was surprised by the public support she gave to homos---al men, a group stigmatized in the 1980s due to cases of HIV/AIDS.
However, this issue also generated a strong conflict between friends. And, as Vanity Fair reports, the musician created a book called 'Rock and Royalty' in 1997 to raise funds for his foundation against AIDS. For this, Elton John had the support of Gianni Versace and Diana herself.
For the publication, Diana posed in an image with her sons William and Harry. Additionally, she would write a paragraph in the book's introduction. However, shortly before she decided to give up participating. This, because the book included photos of semi-N- men and she feared that the crown would be angry.
"Diana feared that would anger the Queen," they noted about the conflict with Elton John. However, the musician was upset because Versace had already shown her the book and she had said she was delighted with it. Thus, the musician reached a serious point of anger with the princess.
Furthermore, a cold letter upset him even more. But beyond her anger, Elton John was worried about Diana, since he seemed to be distancing himself from all of her friends. For this reason, the musician overcame his frustrations and upon regaining contact, they resumed their friendship. Additionally, they became even closer with the death of their dear mutual friend, Gianni Versaci.
