Prime Minister Andrew Holus has broken his silence regarding the meeting with Prince Harry and Meghan at the Initiative Forum.
Disregarding the criticism in the British media surrounding the couple's interaction during the global premiere of the Bob Marley One Love film, Holus viewed it as a means to garner more publicity for Jamaica. The Sussexes shared the limelight with members of Holus's administration, local, and international celebrities.
However, British media swiftly labeled Harry as insensitive for posing with Jamaica's anti-royalist prime minister, referencing Holus's previous message to Prince William about Jamaica moving towards a republican system of government.
Adding to the controversy, a British commentator criticized Harry and Meghan's visit to Jamaica as tone-deaf, especially considering King Charles' hospitalization with an undisclosed illness that same week. Unperturbed, Prime Minister Holus, while speaking at the official launch of the Jamaica Screen Development Initiative, a billion-dollar financing program supporting local screen-based industries, expressed surprise at being drawn into the internal issues of the United Kingdom. He reiterated that his attendance at the film premiere was aimed at promoting Jamaica, chuckling at the unexpected turn of events.
Holus disclosed that he had no intention of meeting Harry and Meghan, emphasizing that he was pleased to see them participating in the significant event but unintentionally found himself embroiled in UK matters. Despite this, he embraced the situation, noting that it brought more publicity to Jamaica. Sharing his positive experience on the film set, Holus mentioned meeting enamored actors who felt a strong connection to Jamaican culture, underlining the impact of Jamaica and Bob Marley on the world.
Contrary to the past, where Holus gifted Prince William a bottle of high-quality rum during a well-organized visit, Harry did not have any scheduled meetings with the prime minister or Meghan. Observers noted that the Holus couple did not appear particularly happy in the presence of Prince Charles, especially after a viral clip captured Meghan whispering into Harry's ear on the red carpet in Jamaica.
Body language expert Judy James suggested that the viral moment might signify a private communication ritual between Harry and Meghan. James emphasized the complexity of messages conveyed through whispers and highlighted couples' non-verbal cues like hand gestures or winks. According to James, Harry's disappearing smile in the clip could indicate a subtle message from Meghan, perhaps cautioning him not to appear too happy or reminding him to mention her involvement in voiceovers.
