Prince Harry Faces Legal Setback, Ordered to Pay Compensation in Defamation Lawsuit Against British Tabloid

This ruling, handed down by a British judge on Monday, marks a significant turn in one of the defamation cases initiated by the Duke of Sussex against various British newspapers.

Among the multitude of lawsuits filed by Prince Harry against British media outlets, a pivotal case revolved around an article addressing the issue of police protection during his visits to the United Kingdom.

Published in February 2022, the article alleged, as per Harry's defense, that he had "lied" and attempted to conceal his efforts to appeal to the government for police protection during his visits to the country.

Following the dismissal of Prince Harry's lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday on a previous Friday, the British justice system mandated on Monday that he must fulfill a compensation payment of $60,780 by December 29. The legal dispute stems from the repercussions of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle relinquishing systematic police protection, funded by British taxpayers, after their decision to step back from the royal family in 2020 and establish themselves in the United States.

With the absence of taxpayer-funded protection, Prince Harry occasionally resorts to private security, financed from his personal resources. Despite his previous rejection by the courts in May to receive police protection during his visits to the UK, the Duke of Sussex initiated a second legal process challenging the decision that denies him systematic police protection in the country.

This ongoing appeal against the British Home Office specifically questions the authorities' decision in February 2020 to grant Prince Harry police protection in specific cases rather than providing it systematically during his visits to the United Kingdom.

Following a comprehensive three-day hearing held last week, the final decision on this crucial matter is currently pending deliberation. The outcome of this legal battle will undoubtedly shape the future dynamics between Prince Harry and the British media landscape.
