In a recent book by Royal author Ingrid Seward, it is revealed that Queen Elizabeth held reservations about Meghan Markle's wedding dress, deeming it too white for someone with a prior marriage.
Meghan, who had previously been married to Hollywood producer Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2013, tied the knot with Prince Harry in Windsor on May 19, 2018. Seward draws parallels between Meghan and Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee who influenced King Edward VIII to abdicate the throne in 1936.
Although the late Queen initially liked Meghan, Prince Philip cautioned her about the uncanny resemblance to Simpson. The Queen's only comment on Meghan's dress was that it appeared too white, expressing concerns about the flamboyantly virginal look for a divorcee getting married in a church.
Leading up to the wedding, it was decided that Prince Charles would escort Meghan partway down the aisle in place of her father, Thomas Markle, who couldn't attend. However, the late Queen was not entirely pleased with this arrangement, and she also worried about Prince Philip walking down the aisle only five weeks after hip surgery.
Despite her initial fondness for her grandson, the Queen was hurt by Harry's decision to step away from the royal family and relocate to the US, where he later criticized the institution in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. At that point, the Queen decided to stop worrying about Harry, recognizing that he wouldn't heed anyone's advice but his wife. Whether she ever saw Meghan as a modern-day Wallis Simpson remains unknown, but the late Philip's concerns may not have been entirely unfounded.
Meanwhile, author Roylo Tom Bower alleges that the late Queen witnessed Meghan being abusive towards palace staff. The Queen reprimanded Meghan, stating that such behavior was not acceptable in the royal family. Meghan, a daughter of a former courtier, shared details on Tumblr, revealing that her desire for a more extravagant engagement ring led her and Harry to approach the Queen.
When the Queen refused, Meghan reportedly became venomous, leading to the Queen's characterization of her as "evil." Unable to make further headway, Meghan and Harry allegedly sought diamonds from Earl Spencer for a tiara, but he declined, contributing to his absence from the christening, though he did attend the wedding for appearance's sake.
