The truth behind the scene in 'The Crown' where Kate Middleton meets Princess Diana

The acclaimed Netflix series, “The Crown,” has captured the attention of millions of viewers throughout its seasons, telling the story of the British royal family. In the second part of the sixth and final season, the creators have introduced an intriguing moment that has left fans wondering about its authenticity: the meeting between Kate Middleton and Princess Diana.

In episode 7, titled “Alma Mater,” the plot goes back in time to December 1996, months before the tragic death of Princess Diana. The scene shows Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, selling The Big Issue magazine with her son, Prince William. At that same moment, a young Kate Middleton and her mother, Carole Middleton, are holiday shopping.

An emotional meeting but not so real

The connection is made when Kate stops to buy a magazine from Diana, who asks for her name and then instructs William: “Say thank you to Kate.” The scene culminates with an excited Kate cutting out magazine photos of William to decorate her room. However, the reality is that this meeting never occurred.

Despite her portrayal in “The Crown,” the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, sadly never had the opportunity to meet her mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Both Kate and William have spoken about Lady Di's absence in their lives.

After the royal wedding in 2011, Prince William expressed how difficult it was to have his mother's absence on that special day. He claimed that was the only time since her passing that he thought it would be great for her to be present.

How did Kate Middleton and Prince William meet?

The series also suggests that Kate, in her youth, was an ardent admirer of Prince William, even introducing the idea that she had posters of him in her room. However, these claims have been refuted by Kate herself during an engagement interview with William, where she joked about how many posters she actually had.

Although “The Crown” has taken some creative liberties in developing the plot, the true story of how William and Kate met during their first year at the University of St. Andrews in 2001 has been confirmed by the royal couple, who were initially friends before starting your relationship.
