Meghan Markle and Prince Harry found themselves seething with frustration when The Palace dismissed their requests prior to a significant Royal event.
This event was none other than the platinum Jubilee of the late Queen Elizabeth II in June 2022, commemorating her remarkable 70-year reign. According to a prominent royal biographer, it was their recent Netflix deal that prompted the couple to assert some demands regarding their involvement in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
In his book "Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors," the author reveals that the Sussexes were deeply disappointed after the Palace rejected all their requests for the Jubilee weekend.
Despite the Palace's refusal, Meghan and Harry proceeded with their plans to attend the Invictus Games in the Netherlands in April 2022. However, their discontent simmered as they felt sidelined from prominent roles at the Jubilee celebrations. They had hoped for a significant presence in exchange for returning to Britain with their children.
Furthermore, it was revealed in the book that Prince Charles preferred the couple, now private citizens, not to partake in certain traditional royal activities during the Jubilee, aiming to secure a more subdued role for them.
Harry even sought to visit the Queen at Windsor, but instead, he was directed to meet his father, Prince Charles, and Camilla first. While they eventually met with the Queen, the issue of their appearance on the balcony remained unresolved. Additionally, stringent security measures were put in place, including screening their entourage for any recording devices.
Despite their disappointment, Meghan and Harry maintained a low profile during the Jubilee weekend. They did attend the Trooping the Colour parade, albeit from the Major General's office, as non-working members of the royal family weren't invited to the traditional balcony appearance. The following day, they made their first official UK public appearance since stepping back as senior royals, attending the national service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral.
However, tensions between Harry, Meghan, and the rest of the royal family remained palpable, especially after their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey just a month before Prince Philip's funeral. Allegations made during the interview strained relations further, leading to speculation about Meghan's attendance at the funeral. Ultimately, she chose to stay in California while Harry traveled to London alone.
In Tom Bower's book, "Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors," he recounts the Queen's relief upon hearing that Meghan wouldn't be attending the funeral. According to Bower, the Queen's response was simply, "Thank goodness."
