Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock, from queens of cinema to the conquest of streaming

The actresses will star in series for Amazon Prime Video and a Netflix movie

Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock, from queens of cinema to the conquest of streaming

A few hours apart, the almost twin news of two big screen stars whose careers, a few years apart, followed similar trajectories, was confirmed. First, as always happened, it was Julia Roberts who made the big leap and, following in the footsteps of many of the biggest names in cinema in recent decades, she joined the ranks of content made for streaming services.

After signing on as the protagonist of the HBO miniseries, Today Will Be Different, and a couple of months after announcing the production of the pilot of the series Homecoming, a spy thriller adapted from a fiction podcast, the story in which Roberts will star and will forward Sam Esmail, creator of the successful Mr. Robot, yesterday joined the future offering of the Amazon Prime Video service. And he did it with a contract for two seasons that will be released simultaneously in all territories, including Argentina, in which the platform is available.

A few hours after the news was known about the former queen of romantic comedies, another of the actresses who held that same title a few years after The Pretty Woman, Sandra Bullock also joined the ranks of streaming by confirming that she will star for Netflix in film Bird Box. It is, as in the case of Roberts, a thriller although it will belong to the science fiction genre. Directed by Susanne Bier (The Night Manager) and written by Eric Heisserer, screenwriter of Arrival, a film starring Amy Adams with which the Netflix project has quite a bit in common.

The post-apocalyptic story will tell the story of a mother, played by Bullock, and her two young children who belong to a small group of survivors of an alien invasion. The three must escape the violence that reigns in the devastated world.

In addition to the coincidence in the change of direction of the two film stars, who will continue to build their careers on new platforms that are friendlier and richer in opportunities for performers of their age than the ruthless Hollywood, Roberts turns fifty in October and Bullock will celebrate the 53 next week. Both actresses also seem to agree on continuing to expand the range of their performances with dramatic roles along the lines of those that earned them their respective Oscars.

In Roberts' case it was for the activist and struggling mother in Erin Brockovich, while Bullock won for A Possible Dream, in which she plays... a struggling mother. Thus, in unison but each in their own time, Sandra and Julia went from queens of romantic comedies in their first years as stars to this present in which they are already the brand new and brightest jewels in the crowns of streaming services.
