Prince William celebrates Aston Villa's historic win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League

As an avid fan of Aston Villa, William could be seen on television enthusiastically cheering and embracing those around him at full-time. The game ended in a 1-0 victory for Aston Villa, recreating the magic of their 1982 European Cup Final win against the German giants. Prior to the start of the Champions League match, Prince William had the opportunity to meet with members of Villa's legendary 1982 European Cup-winning squad at the stadium.

Aston Villa's official social media account acknowledged the historic meeting by posting: "Royalty meets Aston Villa royalty," celebrating the connection between the club and their royal fan. The Prince and Princess of Wales also took to their social media account, formerly known as Twitter, sharing: "42 years on, our 1982 European Cup-winning legends are here on a historic night for @officialAVFC, ready for the first game on home turf in this year’s European adventure. #UTV (Up The Villa)."

Aston Villa, who kicked off their European campaign with a convincing 3-0 win away against Swiss side Young Boys, hosted their first home match in Europe’s top competition in over 40 years. The last time Villa played a home fixture in the European Cup, now the Champions League, was in 1983 when they faced Juventus in the quarterfinals. This victory over Bayern Munich marked a triumphant return to European competition and a night of celebration for the club’s fans and its most famous supporter, Prince William.
