Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s marriage has drawn fresh scrutiny following comments by Lady Colin Campbell, who hinted that the couple might be heading toward separation.
Amid statements from royal insiders, it’s suggested that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may be leading increasingly separate lives, with some experts speculating that Meghan might one day cut ties with Harry. Radar Online reports that Meghan has distanced herself from numerous personal and professional relationships in the past, from family to close friends and ultimately the British Royal Family.
Known as "Duchess Difficult" by palace insiders for her high standards and strong opinions, Meghan has often made bold moves to advance independently—most notably her departure from royal duties, known as “Megxit.” Observers believe that this pattern could mean she’s open to leaving her marriage if it no longer aligns with her goals.
Royal biographer Hugo Vickers has pointed out what he sees as a tendency for Meghan to sever ties when they no longer serve her interests. He highlighted her split from her first husband, Hollywood producer Trevor Engelson, and her distancing from former close friend Jessica Mulroney, along with estrangements from her father and various members of the royal family. According to Vickers, “People usually act in character,” suggesting that Meghan’s history of breakups could one day include Harry. “She dumped her father, her first husband, a former Canadian chef boyfriend, Jessica Mulroney, and even the British Royal Family. Could Prince Harry be next? It’s possible that she may eventually feel she doesn’t need him,” he speculated.
If a split does happen, Vickers and other royal observers predict Meghan might shape the narrative to her advantage, potentially casting herself as the wronged party and painting Harry in a less favorable light. Recent signs of independence between the couple have fueled such rumors: while Harry embarked on a solo charity trip to Africa and attended events in New York without Meghan, she was notably absent. On his 40th birthday, Harry reportedly chose to go hiking with friends rather than celebrating at home with Meghan, adding to speculation about distance within their relationship.
Lady Colin Campbell, a frequent royal commentator, added to the speculation, noting that rumors of a strained marriage are emerging just as King Charles and Queen Camilla are away on an official visit to Australia. Campbell suggested that while King Charles would likely welcome Harry back into the royal fold, it would require a significant shift for other family members to do the same. She said, “There could be some form of rapprochement, but it would likely remain superficial. Catherine feels deeply betrayed by Harry and may never fully trust him again. However, Charles loves his son and will always leave the door open, especially if a divorce occurs.”
Other royal experts have noted that Harry’s life outside the royal family hasn’t quite matched his initial expectations. While Meghan’s advocacy work and media projects have kept her in the spotlight, Harry’s decision to step away from royal duties has dramatically altered his public image. Lady Campbell has remarked that without the royal platform, Harry’s influence has waned, stating, “At best, he’s a global sensation rather than a superstar.” Former magazine editor Tina Brown echoed this view, calling the couple’s departure from royal life a “disaster.” Although Brown has been critical of Meghan’s approach to advice—seeking it, only to disregard it—she has expressed some sympathy for Harry, which some speculate might keep her on good terms with the palace.
Lady Campbell further hinted that Tina Brown may be positioning herself as a potential ally should Harry choose to return to royal life in the event of a split. For now, the future of Harry and Meghan’s marriage remains uncertain, but interest and speculation continue to grow as royal watchers closely follow any developments.
