Prince William, the Prince of Wales, made an unexpected visit to Monaco to watch his favorite football team, Aston Villa, compete in their latest Champions League group stage match.
He was spotted looking thoughtful in the stands at the Louis II Stadium as Monaco secured a 1-0 victory over Unai Emery’s team. Accompanying him at the match was one of his closest friends, Thomas van Straubenzee, who is also the godfather of William's daughter, Princess Charlotte. The two have shared a long-standing friendship since their days at Ludgrove Prep School.
William's latest public show of support for the West Midlands club follows his recent surprise visit to Villa fans in Birmingham last week. The father of three delighted supporters by buying a round of drinks while stopping for a glass of Bulmers cider at a Wetherspoon pub in New Street Station. This impromptu stop came after he attended the College of Paramedics' inaugural Emergency and Critical Care Conference in the city.
One fan, 56-year-old Steve Jones, was particularly impressed by the prince's enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the team. Reflecting on their conversation, he said, "He was fantastic. I was quite amazed at how engaged he was with the club and his level of interest. He’s not just a fair-weather fan—he truly loves Villa with a passion." According to Jones, they discussed various topics, including transfers, the upcoming Champions League trip to Monaco, and all things Aston Villa.
William eagerly asked questions, demonstrating a genuine commitment to the club. When asked if his children shared his passion, William revealed that young Prince George is a Villa fan, but he didn’t want all three of his children to support the same team. Jones described the prince as incredibly engaged, genuinely interested, and fully immersed in conversations about his beloved football club.
