Queen Mary of Denmark Wears Princess Catherine Favorite Gown to Royal Ball

On February 28th, Queen Mary and King Frederik hosted an arts and culture ball at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen, continuing a tradition established by Queen Margrethe and the late Prince Henrik in 1976. Dressed in a pale pink, long-sleeved sequin gown by Jenny Packham, Queen Mary completed her look with the Edwardian Tiara. Although she had worn the dress before, it may have looked familiar for another reason—Princess Catherine has also been seen in the same gown multiple times.

Mary was the first to showcase the elegant design, which features shoulder pads and intricate silver sequin details at the collar and waist, when she wore it for a 50th birthday portrait in 2022. The following year, the Princess of Wales donned the same "Georgia" gown by the British designer for a grand occasion, pairing it with a tiara. Catherine shimmered in the statement dress at the evening banquet celebrating the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa in Amman, Jordan—a place she briefly lived as a child when her father, Michael Middleton, worked for British Airways. For that glamorous event, she complemented her Jenny Packham gown with Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara, a diamond and pearl piece often worn by Princess Diana.

She also debuted the Greville chandelier earrings, which had previously belonged to Queen Elizabeth. The Princess of Wales looked entirely regal in the rose-gold ensemble and royal accessories at the Jordanian wedding and later repeated the exact outfit combination just a few months later. She dazzled in the same gown, tiara, and earrings at Buckingham Palace’s Diplomatic Reception in December 2023, where she joined Prince William, King Charles, and Queen Camilla in greeting members of the diplomatic corps.

Queen Mary revisited the exquisite dress once again for the arts and culture ball and styled it similarly to Princess Catherine. She wore her hair down, with her tiara keeping it in place, much like Kate had done, and accessorized with a pair of striking earrings she had commissioned from the court jeweler. The event marked the first time King Frederik and Queen Mary hosted the ball since his accession to the throne in January 2024. The royal couple arrived at the Great Hall hand in hand and even took to the dance floor during the evening’s festivities, where the King delivered a speech to honor the occasion.
