According to insider reports and royal commentators, a growing number of former staff who worked closely with the couple claim they were left emotionally shaken by the experience. These individuals were never in the spotlight—never featured in wedding photos or seated for interviews. They remained behind the scenes during royal tours and public events, performing critical roles as personal assistants, PR professionals, and private secretaries.
These were seasoned experts hired to support Harry and Meghan’s public life, but many of them didn’t last long. Royal editor Rebecca English explained that the nickname “Sussex Survivors Club” is informally used by ex-staffers who, in her words, "lived to tell the tale"—and it’s not a flattering one. One of the most widely discussed accounts centers around Melissa Touabti, Meghan’s personal assistant, who previously worked with celebrities like Robbie Williams. Known for her talent and professionalism, Melissa played a crucial role in planning Meghan and Harry’s 2018 royal wedding. But within six months, she had resigned.
The reason, according to royal biographer Robert Lacey, was an incident involving embroidered red blankets for a private Sandringham shooting party. A disagreement over the shade of red reportedly triggered an intense outburst from Meghan, leaving Melissa distraught and eventually leading her to quit. However, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand offer a different angle in their book Finding Freedom, suggesting Harry and Meghan were simply unimpressed with Melissa’s performance. Curiously, they even misspelled her name in the book.

Amy Pickerill, a key aide; Heather Wong, a former U.S. political staffer; Jason Knauf, a PR strategist; and Edward Lane Fox, a former military officer and Harry’s longtime secretary—all had left by 2019.
