Dakota Johnson Admits She Hides Her True Feelings About Friends’ Home Decor

Dakota Johnson prefers to keep certain opinions to herself, especially when it comes to home decor. While she has strong personal tastes, she chooses not to be brutally honest with her friends if she doesn’t like their interior design choices.

Dakota Johnson Admits She Hides Her True Feelings About Friends’ Home Decor

In a lie detector interview with Vanity Fair, the 35-year-old actress admitted that she has, on occasion, pretended to like a friend’s decor even when she didn’t. She explained that it’s simply not appropriate to be blunt in those situations. Instead of reacting negatively, she opts for a more diplomatic response, joking that she might say something like, “Ah, look what you did! Amazing,” instead of expressing her true feelings. When the interviewer asked whether she thought accent walls ever looked good, Dakota answered with a decisive “No.” As for karate-chopped pillows, she responded with mild indifference, saying, “Sure, but like, why? You know?” And when it comes to matching sofa sets, her opinion varied depending on who designed them.

The conversation also touched on her own home, which she famously showcased in a 2020 Architectural Digest tour. Her cozy green kitchen drew widespread attention online. When asked if she was surprised by its popularity, she admitted that she was. As for whether she considers herself a trendsetter, Dakota wasn’t so sure and responded modestly.

She revealed in the Architectural Digest feature that she bought her home with the earnings from her breakout role in Fifty Shades of Grey. It was the first house she toured and she decided to buy it on the spot. She was drawn to how clean yet cozy it felt, and instantly knew she would never want to let it go.

Dakota also spoke about the emotional significance of having a permanent home base, especially given the unpredictable nature of her career. She explained that having a place of her own helped her feel grounded. The constant changes in her work schedule made it essential to have a space that belonged only to her—somewhere she could return to and feel centered. Her home, she said, serves as an anchor in her otherwise fast-paced life.

Dakota Johnson's latest film, The Materialists, is set to arrive in theaters on June 13.
