R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket
American actor and retired military man R. Lee Ermey has died at the age of 74, a representative for the actor, best known for his role as foul-mouthed gunnery sergeant Hartman, in the film "Full Metal Jacket," directed by Stanley Kubrick.
His manager, Bill Rogin, said the Golden Globe-nominated actor died of complications from pneumonia.
"It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform everyone that R. Lee Ermey passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia," he said in a statement via Twitter.
"You will all be missed. Semper Fi, Gunny. Good luck," he wrote, referring to the motto of the United States Marine Corps, in which Ermey served from 1961 to 1971, when he was discharged for ill health.
Born in Emporia, Kansas, in 1944, Ermery landed a role in "Apocalypse Now" (1979) while studying drama at the University of Manila in the Philippines. He went on to appear in some 60 films, frequently in military-related roles.
