Cuban actress Ana de Armas explodes against Netflix for qualifying her Marilyn Monroe film for people over 18: "I didn't understand why that happened"
The Blonde actress, who stars in Andrew Dominik's portrait of the late icon Monroe, referred to the +18 rating the film received from Netflix. Blonde will premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival before making its streaming debut on September 28.
"I didn't understand why that happened, "Ana de Armas told. I can tell you a series of programs or movies that are much more explicit and with much more S- content than 'Blonde'. But to tell this story it's important to show all these moments in Marilyn's life that made her end up that way. It was necessary to explain it."
Writer-director Dominik previously told Vulture that the film "colored inside the lines" by telling Monroe's tragic story of abuse.
The director added: “It is dangerous to think for other people. Who knows? On the one hand, I think that given a choice, I'd rather go see the +18 version of the Marilyn Monroe story. Because we know her life was on the line, clearly, from the way it ended. Do you want to see the version with warts and all or do you want to see the sanitized version?
Dominik also pointed out that Blonde could only be made after the #MeToo movement started. “It's a movie that definitely has a moral to it,” he shared. “But it swims in very ambiguous waters because I don't think it's as straightforward as people want to see it. There's something about her to offend everyone."
The director of "Murder of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" warned that audiences may be surprised because the film is "critical of American sacred cows" like Joe DiMaggio (Bobby Cannavale), Arthur Miller (Adrien Brody) and President John F Kennedy (Caspar Phillipson).
Before #MeToo, "nobody was interested in that kind of shit, what it's like to be an unloved girl, or what it's like to go through the Hollywood meat grinder," Dominik previously said.
Monroe's estate also supported the film and De Armas's controversial casting.
