'I was sinking', recalled Emilio Estevez of what happened in the Philippines in the late 1970s
Actor Emilio Estevez revealed that his friend and colleague Laurence Fishburne saved him from death, at aged 14, during the filming of the classic 'Apocalypse Now (1979). The star of the children's franchise 'We Are the Champions exposed what happened in recent participation alongside his father, also actor Martin Sheen, on actress Jennifer Hudson's talk show.
Estevez said he was in the Philippines, accompanying his father during the filming of Francis Ford Coppola's war classic. During a break from filming, during a boat ride, he fell into a quicksand pit.
While Estevez was in the Philippines for filming on tour, just accompanying his father, the star of the 'Matrix' franchise gave life to the young soldier Tyrone Miller in the feature.
Estevez recalled: “We had known each other for a couple of days. He said to me, 'Hey, there's a little boat over there, let's go'. We were 14 at the time. So we were on this boat together, we got close to the beach and I said, 'Well, I'm going to jump and pull the boat up to the area'. I jumped in and it was a quicksand pit.”
“I was sinking and I saw Fishburne looking at me and saying, 'Hold my hand!' Then he pulled me back into the boat. We've been extremely close ever since."
Also, present at the interview, Martin Sheen said he didn't find out about it until several years later: "I called Mr. Fishburne to thank you for saving my son's life."
