Jennifer Grey, known for her role in Dirty Dancing, opened up about the devastating car crash she was involved in with Matthew Broderick in 1987, resulting in the loss of two lives.
In an interview with ET to promote her new memoir, Out Of The Corner: A Memoir, the 62-year-old actress discussed the collision that occurred on August 5, 1987, in Northern Ireland.
Grey and her Ferris Bueller's Day Off co-star, Matthew Broderick, were driving together in Ireland when the fatal accident took place. Two individuals, Margaret Doherty, and Anna Gallagher, tragically lost their lives in the incident. Grey experienced survivor's guilt following the accident, which led her to take a break from her career after Broderick was found guilty of reckless driving.
Recalling the car accident, Grey shared that it was one of the most traumatic experiences of her life, leaving her with a near-death encounter and witnessing the loss of others. She described the terror of being alone on a remote country road with no one else conscious or nearby.
The aftermath of the accident had a profound impact on Grey's life, causing significant changes and reflections.
Grey revealed that she and Broderick were on vacation in Northern Ireland, having embarked on a secret relationship during the filming of their successful comedy, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, released in 1986.
She expressed her initial shock, believing Broderick to be dead as he remained unconscious with amnesia and severe injuries. At that time, Grey was unaware of the two fatalities. The weight of the accident left an indelible mark on her, transforming her perspective and life trajectory.
Grey defended Broderick, emphasizing that both of them were sober at the time of the accident. She clarified that she did not possess any hidden information, as people sought answers, but the incident was simply an unfortunate accident.
The actress continued to express her empathy for the family affected by the tragedy and reflected on the challenges she faced after the accident, which made it difficult for her to fully enjoy the success and acclaim she received for Dirty Dancing.
Following the accident, Grey and Broderick ended their relationship in 1988, shortly after their engagement during the filming of Ferris Bueller. Grey subsequently became involved with Johnny Depp, leading to an engagement in the same year, but their relationship ended nine months later.
While Grey acknowledged the intensity and passion of her connection with Depp, she also highlighted his tendencies of jealousy and paranoia in her memoir. Regarding Depp's ongoing legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, Grey expressed her sadness for all parties involved and hoped for a resolution.
The car accident remains a deeply tragic event in Grey's life, serving as a profound reminder of the fragility and consequences of such incidents.
