Although the lowest-rated episode is found in season 10, it's season 8 of The Big Bang Theory that holds the unenviable distinction of being the lowest-rated overall. Chuck Lorre attributes this to a significant change: Kaley Cuoco's haircut, a transformation that occurred without prior notice.
During the break between seasons, Kaley Cuoco, while working on the independent film "Burning Bodhi," decided to cut her hair. When she returned to the set of The Big Bang Theory, her altered appearance raised concerns among the creative team. Chuck Lorre was already aware of how the audience could react to changes in characters' appearances based on his past experiences with other series.
Reflecting on the situation, Lorre stated, "We had no prior notice about the haircut! Looking back, it was a surprise. I wish we had been informed. If she had approached me, I would have explained how ratings dropped when Jenna Elfman did the same thing in 'Dharma & Greg,' and similarly in 'Felicity.'"
The audience had developed a deep attachment to the characters, appreciating not just their personalities, quirks, and strengths but also their appearances, which had become iconic. Ignoring this emotional connection was an oversight, as Lorre personally witnessed.
He emphasized, "It would have been the same if Johnny [Galecki] had shown up at the wrap party and shaved his head. 'We're all in this together!'" Chuck Lorre emphasized.
Despite this setback, the series managed to rebound, and its final season received acclaim, culminating in the highest-rated episode of the entire series. Fans expressed satisfaction with the closure of the adventures of Leonard, Sheldon, Penny, and the rest of the gang.
