Rather than taking a moment to reflect, the actor reacted sharply to a question about the special effects in his latest movie, Ferrari.
The incident unfolded during a special screening of the film, followed by a Q&A session with Driver. When an audience member raised concerns about the accident scenes, describing them as harsh, drastic, and, in their opinion, cheesy, Driver responded with a blunt and aggressive, "F--k you. Next question."
The audience responded with a mix of tension and nervous laughter following Driver's intense reaction. Despite the incident, the 39-year-old actor, a Marine Corps veteran turned acclaimed actor, received the Special Energa Award at the festival. Additionally, Ferrari, in which Driver plays the role of legendary Italian racing driver Enzo Ferrari, was entered into Camerimage's main competition.
The biographical drama, directed by Michael Mann, explores Enzo Ferrari's life during the summer of 1957 as his company faces financial challenges. The film depicts Enzo's participation in the Mille Miglia, a grueling 1,000-mile open-road motorsports race across Italy's hazardous terrain, while also addressing the personal struggles related to the death of his son. In promoting the film, Driver, who also serves as an executive producer, has undergone a transformation to portray the 59-year-old Italian sports car entrepreneur.
Adapted from Brock Yates' 1991 biography, "Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine," the film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and received a six-minute standing ovation. Despite the critical acclaim, the recent incident at the Camerimage Film Festival added a moment of tension to Driver's multi-month press tour for Ferrari.
