The funeral of Diana of Wales, a protocol worthy of a queen

In 1997, after the death of the princess, a funeral was improvised in accordance with the affection of the English towards her.

England rehearses an action plan for when Queen Elizabeth II dies. This would be the first state funeral in Britain since 1965, following the death of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who was granted the honor by Queen Elizabeth II.

Another type of possible tribute is the Royal Funeral, a category intended only for members of the Royal Household with the status of "Royal Highness." That is, the monarch, her husband and her direct descendants. In the case of Princess Diana of Wales it was none of those mentioned, so after her death a new type of celebration had to be improvised.

Lady Di, as she was popularly known, was the ex-wife of Prince Charles and mother of the Princes of England William and Harry. As there was no type of event to which it was limited, it was decided to celebrate "a unique burial for a unique person", as the spokesman for the Royal Family said.

On September 6, the date of the burial of Diana of Wales was set and national mourning was declared. Behind her coffin walked Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the princess's brother, Charles, and his sons William and Harry.

Although the British Royal Family decided to keep their distance from Lady Di, her farewell ceremony was typical of a princess. Admired by British society and renamed the "People's Princess", the funeral of Diana of Wales was a great social event, in which the British singer Elton John performed "Goodbye England's Rose" to say goodbye to his friend Diana.

In 2002 the Queen Mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, died at the age of 101. Her funeral was similar to that of Diana of Wales, as a similar protocol was used. Behind the coffin, up to 14 relatives walked, including Prince Charles, his two sons, William and Harry. Beethoven's funeral march accompanied the coffin, which carried on a pillow the Queen Mother's crown, a letter from her daughter, a flag and a bouquet of white camellias, her favorite.
