The long-awaited reappearance of King Charles after his cancer diagnosis

King Charles III on Tuesday made his first official public appearance since he was diagnosed with cancer in February and after doctors said they were "very encouraged" by the progress of his treatment.

King Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, were greeted by a crowd upon their arrival at the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre, a cancer facility in central London.

The monarch spoke to patients receiving chemotherapy in a day unit, including Asha Millen, a 60-year-old woman with bone marrow cancer.

"I said, 'How is she doing?' and she answered, 'I'm fine,'" the patient told the press.

Another patient, Lesley Woodbridge, 63, said the king empathized with her and told her: "I have to have my treatment this afternoon too."

Charles III heads the board of trustees of Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support, and the queen, 76, chairs another cancer support association called Maggie's.

At the center's doors, the couple smiled and waved to the crowd and journalists before entering to chat with medical specialists, patients and their families.

The British monarch suspended his public activities in February when cancer was detected while he was receiving treatment for an inflammation of the prostate. The exact nature of his cancer has not yet been revealed.

On Friday, Buckingham Palace said doctors were "very encouraged" by the progress of his treatment and felt "positive" about his recovery.

His treatment will continue and his schedule in the coming weeks will be reduced and subject to the advice of his doctors, a spokesman said.

A planned engagement is the state visit of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan in June.
