The Sussexes returned the keys soon after spending £2.4 million on renovations. Subsequently, they relocated all belongings to California. Sir Michael Stevens confirmed their departure, noting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had vacated Frogmore Cottage. They financed the Sovereign Grant's repairs, significantly enhancing the property's value.

Following this decision, the Sussexes lacked a UK residence, relying on accommodations from hotels, friends, or acquaintances during their visits. According to Royal author Tom Quinn, the Duke perceived this eviction as a profound blow, expressing heartbreak and tears over the King's decision. Reports indicated his frustration and sorrow, feeling the decision was unjust and driven by personal motives.

Quinn further explained that relinquishing royal duties inevitably led to losing their residence, echoing past familial struggles. The Duke viewed this as an unforgiving rejection, evoking memories of his parents' tumultuous divorce. He struggled with the perceived unfairness of losing privileges he felt entitled to, including security funded by British taxpayers and a luxurious UK home.

While some criticize him as privileged and entitled, the Duke sees himself as a perpetual victim of circumstances. In his autobiography, he reflects on the emotional impact of losing Frogmore Cottage, initially seen as their forever home gifted by the late Queen.
