Meghan Markle Wears Princess Diana’s Earrings for Glamorous Date Night With Prince Harry
Meghan Markle paid a meaningful tribute to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, during a glamorous date night with Prince Harry in Canada, stepping out in a pair of Diana’s iconic diamond and sapphire earrings.
The Duchess of Sussex wore the sentimental jewelry while attending the David Foster Foundation’s 40th anniversary gala, according to People. The appearance gave Meghan an opportunity to combine modern Canadian fashion with a subtle connection to the royal family’s history, as Diana’s jewelry has long carried special significance for Prince Harry and his family.
Meghan, 45, completed her elegant evening look with a sophisticated black dress designed by Canadian fashion label Greta Constantine. The understated outfit allowed the striking diamond and sapphire earrings to become one of the most notable details of her ensemble. Prince Harry coordinated with his wife in a traditional black tuxedo and matching bow tie, giving the couple a polished and formal appearance for the star-studded event.
The Sussexes were among several well-known guests at the David Foster Foundation gala. They were joined by Foster’s wife, singer Katharine McPhee, as well as performers and entertainers including Adam Levine and Josh Groban. The celebrations continued with a free concert at Victoria Inner Harbour the following day, bringing together celebrities, supporters and members of the public.
Harry and Meghan’s connection to David Foster goes back several years. Foster, 76, has developed a close friendship with the Sussexes and was famously involved in arranging a private Vancouver Island getaway for the couple in late 2019, shortly before they stepped away from their roles as senior working members of the British royal family.
The friendship also has an unexpected connection through Katharine McPhee. McPhee and Meghan attended Immaculate Heart, an all-girls school in Los Angeles, although they were not in the same year. In a 2020 interview with Access, McPhee explained that her sister was in Meghan’s class and that she and Meghan were involved in school performances during their time there.
McPhee also previously described the relationship between her husband and Prince Harry as particularly close. She said David Foster had developed a “really, really beautiful relationship” with Harry and compared their bond to that of a father and son.
For Meghan, wearing Diana’s jewelry is more than simply a fashion choice. Although she never had the opportunity to meet Diana, who died in a car accident in 1997 at the age of 36, Meghan has repeatedly incorporated pieces associated with Harry’s mother into important public appearances.
During Meghan and Harry’s 2024 visit to Nigeria, she was photographed wearing a gold cross necklace that a source told Page Six had belonged to Diana. The Duchess has also been seen wearing Diana’s Cartier watch, another highly recognizable piece from the late princess’s personal collection.
These fashion choices have often attracted attention because Diana remains an important figure in Harry’s life and public story. Jewelry once worn by Diana can therefore carry emotional meaning for the couple, particularly when Meghan chooses to wear those pieces during significant occasions.
Meghan has also spoken publicly about her wish that she could have known Diana personally. During an appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show in April, the Duchess was asked about comments Prince Harry had previously made comparing his wife with his late mother.
The host read Harry’s description of similarities between Meghan and Diana, highlighting qualities such as compassion, empathy, confidence and warmth. Meghan responded positively when asked how she felt about her husband making that comparison.
“It’s beautiful,” Meghan said, while adding that she wished she could have met Diana.
Her latest appearance in Diana’s diamond and sapphire earrings adds another chapter to Meghan’s long-standing connection with the late princess’s legacy. Rather than recreating Diana’s style exactly, Meghan has generally incorporated individual pieces associated with her into her own contemporary wardrobe, creating a subtle link between the past and present.
For Harry, who was only 12 years old when his mother died, Diana’s memory continues to remain an important part of his life. Meghan’s decision to wear some of Diana’s most recognizable personal pieces has consequently become a recurring point of interest among royal watchers, particularly when the couple appears together at major events.
The Canadian gala also highlighted the Sussexes’ relationships outside the British royal family, bringing together their longtime friends, entertainment figures and supporters. Meghan’s choice of Diana’s earrings added an especially personal detail to an otherwise glamorous evening, quietly honoring a woman whose influence continues to be felt in both Harry’s life and the couple’s public image.
