Jenny McCarthy recalled an uncomfortable moment she experienced at Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s wedding
The actress recounted the wedding held in Italy, revealed her impressions of Cruise’s inner circle, and explained how she linked that experience to Scientology.
Jenny McCarthy recalled an experience that left her feeling intimidated during Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s wedding in November 2006.
The actress and presenter claimed that the Mission: Impossible star tried to draw her into Scientology and described two awkward situations that occurred during the celebrations—events also attended by David Miscavige, the leader of the religious organization. She shared these details while interviewing Anne Gollert Hill—a former member of the Sea Org who spent 20 years in Scientology—on her podcast, The Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg Show.
The conversation prompted 53-year-old McCarthy to reflect on her experience alongside Jim Carrey, with whom she was in a romantic relationship at the time.
An awkward scene involving Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s daughter
McCarthy and Carrey were guests at the wedding of Cruise and Holmes, held in November 2006 at a castle in Bracciano, Italy. During the rehearsal dinner preceding the ceremony, the couple sat across from the bride and groom and their inner circle.
At one point, a nanny brought Suri—Cruise and Holmes’s daughter, who was seven months old at the time—over to her mother. McCarthy, who describes herself as someone who loves babies, asked if she could hold her. According to her account, the request caused a sudden silence among those present.
“It was like Rosemary’s Baby. I got ‘the Scientology look,’” she recalled, referencing the 1968 horror film. Holmes handed the child over slowly, but McCarthy noted that the intense attention from the other guests made her feel deeply uncomfortable. “I just said, ‘Hi, baby,’ because no one was talking,” she recounted. When she handed Suri back to her mother, the conversations resumed as if nothing had happened.
“I thought to myself, ‘Okay, I’m in the belly of the beast right now.’ I had never been so scared,” McCarthy said.
Another awkward moment occurred when Cruise introduced Miscavige to her as his best man. McCarthy responded with irony: “Ha, they picked you. Congratulations.” As she explained, her comment came across as dismissive and did not sit well with the religious leader. Cruise laughed, seemingly in an attempt to ease the tension.
McCarthy’s perception of Katie Holmes
The presenter also shared that, after the wedding, she and Carrey had further get-togethers with Cruise and Holmes. On those occasions, McCarthy would take the opportunity to speak with the actress privately, asking if she was okay or if she needed any help.
“At that time, she looked like a deer in the headlights,” she said of Holmes. “During the wedding, she still seemed like Katie. But once they were married, I noticed a change in her.”
Cruise and Holmes were married for five years. In June 2012, the actress filed for divorce, aiming to “protect her daughter from Scientology,” according to court documents.
Additionally, McCarthy noted that Cruise had also tried to draw Carrey into his religious community. She recalled that Carrey told her he had already rebuffed previous recruitment attempts.
“There were several times when Tom would call Jim and say, ‘Hey, why don’t you guys come to our place in Aspen?’” McCarthy recounted. According to her, Carrey would decline, fearing that they would try to persuade them to join the organization.
