Meghan Markle’s Alleged Fallout With Designer Roland Mouret Over Kate Middleton Mix-Up Revealed
Meghan Markle reportedly had a falling-out with her designer friend Roland Mouret after a misunderstanding involving the return of clothes he had lent her when she was dating Prince Harry. The incident, which allegedly left the Duchess of Sussex feeling embarrassed, is detailed in Mouret’s new memoir, I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher’s Boy Who Dressed the World.
According to an excerpt published by The Times on Friday, the French fashion designer recalled offering to send Meghan several clothing pieces shortly after her relationship with Harry became public in 2016. Mouret said he had instructed a member of his team to deliver the selected garments to the palace, making it clear that Meghan could keep them for as long as she wished. He also emphasized that the arrangement was intended to remain private.
Mouret explained that the situation took an unexpected turn when a member of his team attempted to resolve what they believed was a straightforward logistical matter. According to his account, the employee contacted Kate Middleton’s stylist at the palace and asked for Meghan’s dresses to be returned. The request was reportedly made without understanding the importance of keeping the arrangement confidential.
The designer claimed that Meghan was deeply upset by the mistake and contacted him directly to express her frustration. In his memoir, Mouret recalled her telling him that he had failed to understand the consequences of his actions and had put her in an embarrassing position.
Mouret said he immediately apologized, acknowledging that he understood Meghan had wanted the clothing arrangement to remain discreet. However, he claimed that she responded by telling him she could no longer wear his designs. The designer admitted that he did not understand her decision but chose not to challenge it, respecting her right to decide which fashion labels she wanted to wear.
Reflecting on the disagreement, Mouret suggested that the situation had become more complicated than he had anticipated. He maintained that Meghan’s decision to stop wearing his clothes was entirely her own and was not necessarily a reflection of the palace’s views. In his account, he also questioned whether the incident had attracted as much attention from others as Meghan feared.
The designer later described another exchange that appeared to offer a possible opportunity to repair their relationship. The following year, after reportedly seeing Meghan wearing an affordable high-street version of one of his designs, Mouret decided to contact her. He recalled telling her that he could understand if she no longer wanted to wear his creations, but he found it difficult to accept her choosing an inexpensive imitation instead.
According to the memoir, Meghan responded to his message by suggesting that she should visit him in person. Although the exchange indicated that communication between them had resumed, Mouret’s account does not establish whether their professional relationship returned to its previous state.
The reported disagreement also brings renewed attention to the long-discussed relationship between Meghan and Kate Middleton. Their interactions became a major subject of public speculation following Meghan’s marriage to Harry in May 2018, with media reports frequently portraying the two women as being at odds.
During her widely discussed interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, Meghan addressed one of the most prominent stories surrounding their relationship. She disputed earlier reports suggesting that she had made Kate cry in the days leading up to the royal wedding, explaining instead that the situation had unfolded in the opposite way.
Meghan said the disagreement concerned the flower-girl dresses for her wedding and admitted that the experience had hurt her feelings. However, she declined to share every detail, explaining that Kate had apologized and that she had forgiven her.
According to Meghan, Kate acknowledged what had happened, sent flowers and included a note expressing regret. Meghan also described the Princess of Wales as a good person, arguing that media coverage had encouraged the public to view one woman as a hero and the other as a villain.
She emphasized that people did not need to dislike one woman to support the other, challenging the idea that their relationship should be understood as a competition. Her comments were an attempt to explain the disagreement while discouraging further hostility between their respective supporters.
Meanwhile, reports about the possibility of reconciliation within the royal family have continued to attract attention. Speculation recently circulated that Harry and Meghan might apologize to Prince William and Kate for their 2021 interview with Winfrey. However, royal commentator Tom Sykes reportedly dismissed those claims in comments to Page Six, describing the suggestion as unfounded and arguing that Harry had consistently shown no intention of apologizing.
Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield also questioned the credibility of reports suggesting that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex regretted the interview or were preparing to acknowledge wrongdoing. Speaking about the rumors, she argued that their public stance had remained largely unchanged and urged readers to approach such claims with skepticism.
Neither the reported disagreement with Mouret nor the renewed speculation about the royal family should be treated as proof of the private relationships involved. Mouret’s account reflects his recollection of events, while the claims about a possible royal apology have been disputed by commentators. As with many stories involving the Sussexes and the Waleses, the distinction between documented public statements and reported private conversations remains important.
