If there is a film industry that the countries of the European Union look at with healthy envy, that is the French one. French and French-language cinema has emerged as a viable and effective alternative to the dominance of Hollywood cinema. They are not chimeras, since the data show that the French industry is the most buoyant on the European scene, as well as the one that has a commercial strategy with a view to the international market, which has allowed it to be a benchmark for the rest of the countries and a example to follow.
According to data from the European Audiovisual Observatory, in 2016, there was an increase of 5.2% in audiovisual productions in the EU countries, which means a growth of 4.4% in terms of feature films produced. It is an example of the constant and upward trajectory of cinema in Europe, since between 2007 and 2016, the increase in cinema production has increased to 47% in total.
Of these data, French cinema has a privileged position. According to 2016 data, France ranks fifth out of the 10 largest markets in the world in terms of box office receipts, while it is sixth in terms of feature film production and fifth in number of cinemas. In all these figures, France is the leading country in Europe, since only ahead are markets such as the United States, China or India.
