"Marriage for us cannot be a prison," said the actor, clarifying that he did not suggest such a choice for everyone.
Will Smith spoke bluntly about the kind of open marriage that he has with his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. In an extensive cover interview that will appear in the magazine, the actor took up the subject again in July 2020, his best confirmed that he had an extramarital "affair" with the singer August Alsina (a friend of his son Jaden).
That revelation that made headlines everywhere was on Jada's own Red Table Talk, with Will as a guest, clarifying the periods of non-monogamy in her marriage. Now Smith expanded on the subject.
“Jada never believed in conventional marriage... Jada had family members who had an unconventional relationships. So she grew up in a very different way than I did. There were endless meaningful discussions about, what is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple? And for much of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, without thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection," the Men in Black actor recounted.
Regarding his decision to come clean on Jada's show, Will said they did it to avoid being publicly judged. "The search for truth is the only way to be happy in this life and we came to the agreement that authenticity was liberation from the shackles of fame and public scrutiny," he explained.
The author of the interview explained that those who watched that episode of Red Table Talk probably felt that Jada was “the only one having other s*x when that wasn't the case, Smith delicately explained to me. , in fact, the case.” Smith, however, did not elaborate on what he did outside of his marriage.
“We have given each other trust and freedom, believing that everyone has to find their way,” Will told the magazine. “And marriage for us cannot be a prison. And I do not suggest our way to anyone. I do not suggest this trial to anyone. But the experiences that the freedoms we've given ourselves and the unconditional support, to me, is the ultimate definition of love."
