Christina Applegate says that 'I'm ashamed of my appearance'

Christina Applegate has revealed that she felt belittled after starring in 'Married with Children', a comedy series that aired between 1987 and 1997.

The actress, who was just 15 when the show debuted, spoke to the magazine. In the chat, the artist was asked if it was "frustrating" to see that the quality of her performance as Kelly Bundy was ignored by most fans of the series.

Christina Applegate says that 'I'm ashamed of my appearance'

"Yes, totally," she replied. "I had never gotten any kind of lust from anyone before [the production], because I wore bell bottoms and loafers, and I wore patchouli fragrance. I was just a gross hippie girl."

"Looking back in hindsight, it's pretty gross," Applegate continued, referring to how she was S- as a teenager. Men had posters of this little 17-year-old girl – it was me holding pearls. Like, who let me do that? I didn't even know what the connotation was," she lamented.

The actress also said that when 'A Family Love' ended, she was offered "billions" of roles similar to Kelly Bundy; but she preferred to refuse them because she wanted to try different characters.

Unfortunately, though, the directors didn't want to give him that chance. "People would say, 'Oh my, she had the best audition ever, but it's Christina; and we can't have that name attached to this masterpiece.' This has happened more times than you can imagine," stated.

With the beginning of her career so associated with physical appearance, Applegate even revealed that today, she is hesitant about watching her most recent works, such as the drama and comedy series 'Dial Amiga para Matar'. "It's just that sometimes I cringe at how I look. It's so hard to look at myself as this other person; and I don't look like myself anymore, obviously," she reflected. "And that's really, really hard for me because so much of my life has been my image. Then I see this person and I'm like, 'Who is this person with 20 chins?' To be brutally honest, that's what's really hard for me about watching [my work]."

In another recent interview, this time with The Hollywood Reporter, the star accused a group of ABC TV channel executives of lacking compassion after she was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 and underwent mastectomy procedures and breast reconstruction. “I didn't come out in defense of my limits back then. I should have asked for a little more time after one of my surgeries. I went back to work just two weeks after the reconstruction. And that was really hard for me,” she said, before pointing out that her bosses at the time “were not very nice, empathetic human beings.”

"I didn't feel like I had the voice to say, 'You know, it's only been two weeks, I'm still in a lot of pain and maybe I deserve a little more time,'" the star added.

Already upon disclosing a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2021, Applegate noticed that she had more understanding from her co-workers. “[People from the 'Dial Amiga para Matar' team] told me, 'I wish someone had warned me in the beginning; reminded me to preserve myself'. One of these friends has had [multiple sclerosis] for 20 years. She is an actress and hid it for 10 years; she forced the bar and suffered because of it. She told me: ‘You need to tell them [what is necessary for you], now that you have made it public’.
