The consequences of Tom Cruise not using doubles in all his action scenes

The actor prefers to shoot all the action and extreme scenes himself and these are the reasons and the effects it has had on him

Top Gun, The War of the Worlds, The Mummy, and his masterpiece, Mission Impossible, are some of the films in which we have been able to see Tom Cruise in action. Never better said in this case, because the New York actor has always filmed all the risk scenes, without any double lights.

The consequences of Tom Cruise not using doubles in all his action scenes

Quite a feat that for the actor begins, if he is not already, to be a piece of cake. And it is that since he began shooting action movies in the middle of the 80s, he has wanted to train and work hard enough to film all the most extreme scenes himself.

We have been able to enjoy the last one before the film is released, and it has left, in fact, its director, Christopher McQuarrie, speechless. It will be in the seventh installment of Mission Impossible, and from what we see, it will not be the only one.

In it, Tom Cruise accelerates with a motorcycle at high speed on a road that ends in a precipice. When he reaches the end, he jumps, drops the motorcycle, and runs meters and meters in the void, until he lands by himself with the parachute.

Once again, a feat. And all this with sixty years. While they are recording it, applause is heard, emotional hugs, and a trembling voice that affirms that the scene has turned out perfectly. They probably never had to shoot it again, but that hasn't happened, far from it, in all the action scenes he's had to shoot.

Many of them he has repeated up to 64 times, like the zero-gravity scene on a plane that he filmed for The Mummy. Or that impossible scene jumping from building to building for Mission Impossible, or off a plane for another of his installments.

A fascination for recording his own scenes that he has explained on more than one occasion and that he defends tooth and nail.

What motivated you to record all your scenes?

Defying death on many occasions, and without any type of vertigo, Tom Cruise has recorded more than a hundred action scenes where he has left his skin.

We have seen him sitting on top of a plane flying without any kind of grip, also climbing the Burj Khalifa building, jumping from an empty plane or, piloting an army plane.

A love for filming his own scenes that comes to him, according to himself, since he was little. And it is that he always had a lot of imagination, and he saw himself having millions of adventures and jumping from plane to plane. Something that he continued to pursue at the age of 18 when he started going to auditions.

At the age of 25, he began filming his own stunts, asking that there be no more doubles for them. The reason? Be as honest as possible with his audience and make the most of his abilities.

“Nobody ever asked Gene Kelly why he danced in his movies. When I make a film, I try to use all my skills and what I know, as well as the people I work with. That is the beauty of cinema” he commented when he was about to release the latest installment of Top Gun.

And it is that it bothers him deeply that they always ask him about that decision. Something that for him is very natural and that shows the passion for hard work that he has had since he was little when he did door-to-door sales in his neighborhood.

The problem is not that, from time to time, he has to repeat certain action scenes, it is that he literally risks his life, which causes some accidents and the anger of his work teams.

The day he was in full action scene he almost lost his life

Tom Cruise has had several accidents while filming his action scenes, something he has joked about on many occasions.

“I'm a very physical actor and I love doing those scenes. I study, train, and dedicate a lot of time to understanding everything. I have broken many bones "he recounted in an interview last year with Graham Norton.

And so much so. While filming the sixth installment of Mission Impossible, he had several accidents, one of which could have been fatal.

And it is that there was a scene in which the actor had to get off a helicopter, with such bad luck that he fell from there getting caught with an object that he was hanging from there. Meters high and below, the void.

Immediately, his companions began to scream, thinking that the actor could have died, although he recovered and wanted to continue with the scene.

"You don't usually do those shots many times. You do them until you get them, then it's like, come on, please, let's move on," the actor said about it. Of course he did, he continued with the scene as if nothing had happened.

In that same movie, he had to film a scene where he was skydiving, breaking his leg. Despite everything, he decided to continue with the scene.
