The leader of the corridos tumbados movement has received a serious message that may lead to the cancellation of one of his upcoming October shows. The mayor of Tijuana is currently evaluating the situation.
Featherweight has gained increasing prominence in recent months due to the rising popularity of corridos tumbados, a genre that celebrates Mexican culture not only in Mexico but also worldwide, particularly through his collaboration with Bizarrap, which has amassed over 200 million views.
Hailing from Zapopan, the artist has been maintaining a busy international schedule, highlighted by his appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards, where he became the first Mexican artist to grace the stage.
However, Featherweight's journey has hit a rough patch as it has come to light that he has received threats in the form of written warnings, allegedly from irate drug traffickers who take issue with the singer's popularity.
In these messages, purportedly signed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the young artist is cautioned that failure to cancel one of his October shows will result in severe consequences that directly jeopardize his life.
"This is directed at you, Featherweight. Stay away from the stage on October 14th, because it will be your final performance due to your disrespect and loose talk. If you show up, we will take extreme measures. Regards: CJNG," reads the banners that were sent.
These ominous banners were discovered in various locations in Tijuana, Baja California, with one displayed on a vehicular bridge along Prolongación Avenue, another in the División del Norte neighborhood, and the last in the Libert neighborhood.
In response to these developments, Mayor Montserrat Caballero of Tijuana explained that they are carefully assessing the situation before taking any actions to ensure they accurately gauge the real threat posed to Featherweight and his concert attendees. Additionally, she took the opportunity to criticize the corridos tumbados artist for seemingly glorifying criminal activities through his music, lyrics, and performances.
"We understand that artists like Featherweight can inadvertently glamorize crime, which can anger certain groups," Caballero stated. As of now, Hassan Emilio Kabande, the singer's real name, has not issued any statements regarding the threats and awaits a decision from the Tijuana city council.
