Scarlett Johansson has some of the most beloved films of her generation. Whether it's blockbusters thanks to her work at Marvel or her independent films, the Oscar-nominated actress has something for everyone.
However, not all of her films have received applause from fans. A few years ago a film was released that received a harsh response from the public, who booed it at its premiere and caused the actress to end up in tears.
The Scarlett Johansson movie that received boos
In 2013, Scarlett Johansson arrived at the Venice Film Festival alongside director Jonathan Glazer. The duo presented her film, Under the Skin, one of the most anticipated titles of that year and which would see the actress experimenting with another type of cinema after her work at Marvel.
However, the result was not what was expected. After its presentation, the film received boos and some left the theater before its premiere. In conversation with The Guardian, the artistic director of the Venice Festival, Alberto Barbera, recalled this tense moment.
"It was one of the worst premieres I've ever been to. It was the only time the audience booed a movie," Barbera recalled of the premiere of Under the Skin. And, although boos are often seen in Cannes, this attitude is not usually seen at events like the one in Venice.
As he remembers, Scarlett Johansson was quite affected by the situation. "Scarlett was almost in tears. I tried to tell her, 'Don't worry, eventually the movie will be recognized,'" he said of the actress's reaction.
Something she was quite right about. Although Under the Skin had a lukewarm release and flopped at the box office, it gained a cult following and the BBC named it one of the best films of the 21st century.
