Charlize Theron shared the suffering she went through to prepare for her character
In 2004, Charlize Theron won an Oscar for her role in Monster, a film in which she appeared unrecognizable and with a very different physique than what we are used to. Now, the actress has 'transformed' again for her latest work, Tully, which hits Spanish cinemas on June 22. In the film, directed by Jason Reitman (Juno, Up In The Air, Young Adult), Charlize plays Marlo, a totally exhausted mother of three who decides to hire a nanny and sees how her life changes radically. However, for the 42-year-old actress, it was not a bed of roses and to prepare for the character she had to gain more than 20 kilos.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the South African acknowledged that at first she found it fun to be able to eat everything she wanted, however, little by little things got worse and she became her worst nightmare. For her it has been a "very long" physical journey and she only had a window of three and a half months to reach that weight: "The first three weeks were fun because I was like a kid in a candy store. So it was great to go to having breakfast at In-N-Out and having two shakes. But then it wasn't fun anymore. Eating so much food becomes a job. I remember setting my alarm to get up to eat in the middle of the night. "I would wake up at two in the morning and eat a plate of cold macaroni and cheese," said the actress, remembering everything she had to do to maintain that excess weight, a task that was not easy at all: "For the first time in my life, life I had to eat a lot of processed food and drank sugary drinks.
The Oscar winner explained that she "just wanted to feel what this woman was feeling, and I think that was the best way to approach her." Charlize, who is the mother of Jackson, six years old, and August, two, tells in a very nice way how strange her children were to see her like this. "My little son was convinced that he had a baby in my belly. I thought: 'This is too real for me'. And they still refer to this movie as the movie where mommy had a big belly."
Even so, the worst was yet to come and the actress has confessed that when she finished the film and she wanted to return to her weight, it was "hell" and that she suffered a strong depression. "There's nothing fun about that. It took about a year and a half. It was a long, long journey," he explained to Entertainment Tonight, adding: "And it's hard because I had press conferences and movies and no one knew I had done it." done for this."
Charlize has admitted that she was very worried because she was having a hard time losing all the kilos she had gained: "At Monster I didn't eat anything for five days and I was fine. But your body is not the same at 27 as it was at 43, and "My doctor made sure I was aware of it: 'You're 42 years old, calm down. You're not dying, everything is fine.'" Of course, despite everything, for her the effort has been worth it and she affirms that it is important for mothers to share with their partners how they feel, without being afraid that they may judge them for asking for help or saying that there are times when the motherhood surpasses them. "A lot of parents have come to me and said these are things they didn't know. I think that's up to us and that we should feel more comfortable saying, 'This is really hard and it's not how they told me it was going to be.'
