Currently, Depp is engaged in a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife over a 2018 opinion article she wrote, in which she discussed surviving domestic violence. Although Depp is not explicitly named, his legal team argues that the article falsely implies he subjected her to s---al and physical abuse during their marriage. Depp has countersued, accusing his ex-wife of orchestrating a smear campaign against him.

Bruckheimer, the 78-year-old producer renowned for major Hollywood films like Top Gun and Bad Boys, spoke to The Sunday Times' Culture magazine, indicating uncertainty about Depp's return. "Not at this time," he stated when asked about Depp's future in films.

Confirming the much-discussed reboot of Pirates of the Caribbean with a female lead, Bruckheimer revealed ongoing discussions with Margot Robbie. He explicitly mentioned, "Yes, we're in talks with Margot Robbie." Bruckheimer also disclosed that they are actively developing two scripts for the Pirates franchise—one centered around Robbie and the other without her involvement.

Johnny Depp, who famously portrayed Captain Jack Sparrow in five films of the beloved franchise, expressed his willingness to return for the sixth installment during a trial. He emphasized the importance of giving his character a fitting conclusion, stating, "My feeling was that these characters should be able to have their proper send-off. There's a way to end a franchise like that... I planned to continue until it was time to stop."

Despite initially indicating openness to reprising his role, Depp later declared that he would not return, even if Disney offered him "all the money on this earth."

In 2020, Margot Robbie provided insights into her role in the upcoming Pirates film, which diverges from the originally planned reboot featuring Depp. She hinted at "a lot of girl power" in the film and clarified her position by saying, "I'm not a producer on Pirates, so I'll sit back and wait for the process." Robbie expressed excitement about the prospect of introducing a significant female element to the Pirates of the Caribbean world.
