In the latest installment of his podcast series, McCartney: A Life in Lyrics, Paul McCartney delves into the early days of his relationship with John Lennon.
The podcast, which explores McCartney's extensive career and dissects songs from The Beatles, Wings, and his solo ventures, brings forth revelations about the iconic duo's first meeting.
Titled "Here Today," the new podcast episode not only scrutinizes the song dedicated to Lennon but also sheds light on McCartney's reminiscences of their initial encounter.
Recalling the moment he first laid eyes on Lennon, McCartney shared, "The first time I saw John Lennon, he got on the bus... it was like a slightly older young man with a kind of rock hairstyle, a lot of grease, black jacket, sideburns, sideburns as we call them. And I remember thinking, 'Well, he's a cool guy. I have no idea who he is.'"
The musician revealed that his usual conversations about songwriting with others took a different turn with Lennon. McCartney explained, "But I met John and we got chatting. 'Well, I've written a couple of songs.' And he said, 'Well, me too,' so that was like a final point. So it was like 'let me hear what you've done and I'll show you what I've done.' That started bringing us together."
Describing the inception of their relationship, McCartney disclosed that he was likely the first person to share his songwriting pursuits with Lennon. The two would later convene at McCartney's house, sharing tea, filling his father's pipe, and engaging in musical discussions.
Throughout the podcast series, McCartney has analyzed iconic songs such as "Eleanor Rigby" and shared personal reflections, including his feelings about Yoko Ono's presence during the Let It Be sessions. He also expressed relief at having reconciled with Lennon before the latter's passing. Explore the revelations in the latest episode of McCartney: A Life in Lyrics.
