Taylor Swift and bullying, 'If you are lucky enough to be different, never change'

Taylor Swift was born on December 13, 1989 in Pennsylvania (USA) and is one of the most important singers on the music scene.

Taylor Swift and bullying, 'If you are lucky enough to be different, never change'

When she was 12 years old she started playing the guitar and composing her songs and, with a lot of effort and after some disappointments, she got a record deal to record her first album and hasn't stopped since. Seven albums on the market, 10 Grammys, many established records and more than 180 awards in her collection, she is one of the most influential and most followed young women in the world.

But what few know is that she suffered bullying when she was little. At 12 years old, Taylor had already decided that she wanted to dedicate herself to music, but her classmates did not understand why she preferred to go sing at karaoke bars or cafes instead of doing things typical of girls her age. So it didn't take long for them to start vacuuming him. They would get up from the table where she was eating and make fun of her because of her physical appearance: for being tall, for having curly hair, because her eyes were small...

“High school was difficult because I was humiliated by the typical group of “popular girls.” They thought she wasn't cool or pretty enough, so they stopped talking to me. “My classmates thought it was weird that I liked country music, so they laughed at me.”

“I went through times when I didn't have friends because while other girls went to sleepovers or went out, I preferred to be on stage. “I was different from them.”

Taylor managed to be in charge of singing the national anthem that same year at a baseball game and, upon being recognized in the press, she made her teammates bitter the next day.

Later, at age 14, Taylor moved to Nashville to pursue her dream and her bullying ended. She made friends at her new high school and fit in very well, because in the city of country music, no one saw her as the “strange one in the class” for wanting to be a singer. Thanks to all those experiences, Taylor Swift began writing songs to vent her feelings. One of them, 'The Outside', is included on her first album.

“They didn't invite me to parties, now I look back and I'm very grateful for that. “I stayed at home playing the guitar until my fingers bled.”

“The truth is that if I hadn't come home after having a horrible day at school, maybe I wouldn't have felt motivated to write a song. So, in part, I have to thank them!“

Taylor has mentioned that she has even seen some of her stalkers at her concerts, wearing shirts and lights with her name on them, and that she finds it strange because she realizes that they don't remember how badly they treated her.

Taylor has said in several interviews that even today she feels very insecure about almost everything about herself, as a result of all those girls at school who pointed out and made fun of each and every one of her (supposed) flaws. But on the other hand, she feels grateful to be where she is, to have achieved so much and to have all the love and support of her family, her friends and her fans.

It is an example of overcoming and proof that bullying can be overcome and does not have to condition our future. Being different from everyone else is precisely what has made her achieve her dream and make a difference. And, as she herself once said: “If you are lucky enough to be different, never change.”
