Interest in Princess Katherine has surged this year, particularly after she stepped out of the spotlight for health reasons.
This interest peaked in mid-March when she underwent stomach surgery and announced her cancer diagnosis and treatment. As the most beloved member of the British royal family, Katherine received an outpouring of support, including letters from prominent figures worldwide.
In February, palace officials prepared a statement for the king to announce her diagnosis, as is customary. However, Katherine chose to record a video message to share the news in her own words. Kensington Palace stated they would not provide ongoing commentary on her health, but Katherine's deeply personal journey has led her to take control of her communication.
After her 2023 Christmas Day appearance with the royal family, Katherine's absence from official engagements in early January worried fans. Following her abdominal surgery on January 17th, Kensington Palace announced that she would remain private until after Easter and confirmed that her illness was non-cancerous. Throughout January to March, Katherine faced baseless conspiracy theories and criticism, especially after an altered Mother's Day photo and paparazzi images of her with her mother at Windsor.
In a public statement, both written and in video format, Katherine revealed she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment, contrary to her doctor's initial thoughts. As speculation grew, she mentioned starting preventative chemotherapy but did not specify the treatment's end date. Despite her eagerness to resume royal duties, she humbly requested time and space to recover in peace.
Katherine participated in the Trooping the Colour festivities, including the military parade, carriage processions, and appearing on Buckingham Palace's balcony. While this was a positive step, there is no set schedule for her next public appearance. On June 14th, the prince announced his hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, allowing the princess to follow her doctor's recommendations and prioritize her health. Kensington Palace does not plan to announce these engagements in advance.
