Meghan Markle Rejects ‘Suits’ Because She Doesn’t Want to Be Associated with Actors
Expectations were high, but a surprise came at the Golden Globes when Meghan Markle, the former actress turned Duchess of Sussex, decided to decline a reunion with the cast of the popular series ‘Suits’. Does her new status as Prince Harry’s wife and acting not make a good combination for the now former member of the British royal family?
The Resurgence of ‘Suits’ and Meghan’s Absence
The ‘Suits’ phenomenon, which aired between 2013 and 2019, experienced a strong resurgence when Netflix added the episodes to its catalog during the summer, captivating viewers worldwide. After months of binge-watching the show, the anticipation of seeing the actors reunited was high, and the Golden Globes seemed like the perfect venue for this long-awaited reunion. The cast members were invited to present one of the awards that night, generating considerable excitement among fans of the series.
Patrick J. Adams and Gabriel Macht took to the stage to present the award for Best Television Drama Series, which went to Jesse Armstrong's Succession. Before even announcing the nominees, they joked about the late-blooming phenomenon of Suits: while it was initially one of the most-watched cable series, between June and October it became a ratings phenomenon that surpassed any other streaming content.
Macht, who plays Harvey Specter, a charming and ruthless Chicago lawyer in the series, commented: "There's nothing more dramatic or anxiety-inducing than waiting all night and hearing that your category has finally been announced." Adams, known for his role as Michael Ross on the show, responded by referencing the long gap between the Suits finale and this resurgence in popularity: "Yes, it's true. It's hard to imagine having to wait so long to see your show receive this kind of recognition."
But when the opportunity arose to meet with her former co-stars at this important film industry event, Markle chose to stay out of it, thus avoiding any association with her past acting career. Currently, as Prince Harry's wife, she is focused on projecting an image as a duchess committed to philanthropic work. She is also considering a career in US politics, so reviving her role as Rachel Zane, a lawyer with romantic relationships within the workplace, might not be well-received.
Meghan Markle's Invisible Presence at the Golden Globes
Despite her physical absence, Meghan Markle's presence was felt throughout the event. Jo Koy, the host of the awards ceremony, didn't miss the opportunity to make controversial comments about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Netflix debut. His remarks, in which he suggested they received millions "for doing absolutely nothing," highlighted the impact and controversy the royal couple continues to generate in the entertainment world.
