In a new profile from Vulture, they reviewed the extensive pre-production and casting phase of Mad Max, which ended with Tom Hardy in the title role. The Briton ended up beating the other two favorites: Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name).
In one of the tests, Hardy and Hammer acted side by side to test which one would be best for the character. As the audition cameraman reveals, Hardy was so excited that he ended up spitting in Armie's face during the scene.
After this, Hammer would have gone to the Mad Max team and told them to choose Tom Hardy, because "he needs him more than I do." It was that fierceness and coldness in the tests that convinced the production to cast the Venom star.
"Hardy has that kind of pent-up emotional dryness that you find in a post-apocalypse, buried under all that hatred for the world. There was an intensity that burned behind the slow," said cameraman Todd Matthew Grossman.
For his part, George Miller also remembered Tom Hardy with that image and compared it to the first Mad Max. "I had the same feeling about Tom that I had when Mel Gibson walked in. There was this irreverent charisma, the charisma of animals. You don't know what they think, but they are enormously attractive," said the director.
A Fury Road prequel is currently being worked on that will tell the story of Furiosa, the role masterfully played by Charlize Theron. However, this time it will be Anya Taylor-Joy who will play the character.
